These paintings honour the quiet moments I’ve found since moving from Toronto to rural eastern Washington state last August. This move took away everything familiar, and packing up a whole studio and life to be moved 2235 miles took a lot of time away from my art. Not being able to work in the way and at the capacity I was used to was hard for me mentally. My plan was to get the studio set up as soon as possible and get back to painting like I was before. I promptly made A LOT of failed paintings lol and felt very bad about it. I never expected that all these life changes would influence my artwork but it caused a shift and this collection slowly took shape. Wasted Hours is a window into the quiet stillness of my new life but also how I’ve negatively thought about my time spent in the past year. I like to tell myself that no time is wasted even if you’re making work you don’t like (or not making anything at all) because those times are necessary for getting your work wherever it needs to be. But when you’re in the weeds it’s not always easy to remember that!
